DBJ-JVCP to host 2nd Workshop in Equity Financing for Business Service Intermediaries (BSIs)

The Venture Capital Unit of the Development Bank of Jamaica will on September 18 host the second in the series of Training Workshops for Business Services Intermediaries (BSIs) on the topic Introduction to Equity Financing.  The two-and-a-half-day workshop is to be held at the Spanish Court Hotel on Worthington Avenue and is geared specifically for practitioners within the business enablers community i.e., consultants and professional, who facilitate, train and build the capacity of entrepreneurs and small business owners in growing there businesses.

Dr. Winsome Leslie, formerly of the Inter-American Development Bank, developed the curriculum and in July 2019 led the first of two workshops as part of the Jamaica Venture Capital Programme (JVCapital) project to strengthen the capacity of business advisors in this area. There are six modules to the workshop covering topics such as: Financing Options for SMEs; Introduction to Equity Financing; Angels, Venture Capital & Private Equity; The Pitch – How do you Prepare; Negotiating the Equity deal and Equity Investment Trends & Alternative Financing Structures.

Audrey Richards, Project Coordinator of JVCapital, under whose leadership the Curriculum Development and the Training Workshops were designed and are being executed, states:  “Having scanned the entrepreneurial ecosystem through focus groups and research, it was revealed that there are gaps and inconsistencies in how entrepreneurs and SMEs are being prepared for engaging with funders. This initiative is to ensure that the business enablers and consultants are properly equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to be able to provide standardized guidance and the right information to entrepreneurs and small businesses on equity financing and its attendant benefits in growing and scaling their businesses.”

Mrs. Richards is confirming that space is limited so interested persons are being asked to call the DBJ’s Venture Capital Unit at (876) 929-4000 or via email at ndoyen@dbankjm.com for further information.
